Q: What is commercial flower arranging?
A: This is where we teach you how to cost a floral display and work out how many and what selection of flowers needed and the type and quantity of foliage to use.

Q: Where do I buy sundries and fresh flowers wholesale?
A: Students are issued with a list of flower and sundry wholesalers

Q: How do we treat flowers and foliage?
 A: Students are given notes and instruction on how to treat flowers and foliage and how to treat specific flowers like Roses, Orchids, Gerberas, Lilies, etc.

Q: How do we know how much to charge for our finished arrangement?
 A: Students are taught how to price each display wholesale and how much to sell each display.

Q: What type of designs does a student cover on Module One?
A: Students are taught geometric shapes and they advance onto continental and funky displays.

Q: WHAT IS COMMERCIAL SYMPATHY FLORISTRY?

Being the owners and managers of a successful Florist business in the past and running a Kay's Training School for over 20 years, the tutors at  Kay’s Flower School have a vast experience and knowledge of the daily running and the pitfalls and challenges faced by students intending to work in or own their own florist business.  

At Kay's School Of Floristry we can advise students on the tips of the trade, how to deal with customer and trade enquires, where and when opportunities arise to create more business and the best way to deal with these situations. 

 Kay's School of Floristry is an independent business, that means we can tell you all the tricks of the trade and our aim is to support and advise students on opening and managing a floristry business or indeed working from home or as a  freelance florist. 

Q: What is commercial sympathy floristry
A: A Commercial Florist must be able to give their customers the option of a section of sympathy tributes i.e. Hearts, Crosses, Cushion, Pillows, Gates of Heaven, Vacant Chairs, Mam’s, Dad’s, Pint of Guinness, Cars, Bikes, Trains, Teddies, Chaplets, etc sympathy tributes.

Q: How would I know how to make unusual design?
A: Commercial florist will be able to purchase or make each base and how to edge a base using ribbon or foliage and how to insert a spray onto the design.

 Q: How much will each completed funeral tribute cost a commercial florist?
A: Students are advised how much each base will cost wholesaler and what the % mark-up on each design.

Q Does a commercial florist need to have excellent business skills?
A: A certain amount of skills are required to open a florist shop.

Q Does a commercial florist need good communication skills?
A: You need to be able to interact with customers, sensitive to the needs, emotions, and have an ability to put people at ease and be a good salesperson

Q: What is the difference between flower arranging and floristry?

A: Flower Arranging involves designing flowers into Oasis (Foam) in baskets and various containers. Floristry is the skill of knowing how to make professional bridal bouquets and sympathy tributes


Q: Is a Florist work easy and is there heavy lifting involved?
Q: Working in a florist shop is not an easy job, boxes of flowers and some arrangements weigh very heavy, although floristry is very enjoyable, there are very happy and sad days in a florist business.

Q: Do you need to be creative to become a florist?
A: A Commercial Florist must aim to be creative, imaginative, be aware of design, and have an eye for colour.

Q: What do students need to bring to class?
 A: Florist Scissors, a Camera, Plastic sleeves and folders for handouts, a packed lunch, large notebook, a biro, and coloured pencils.

Q: Will the classroom be cold?
 A: As the room has to be kept cool (not freezing) to keep the flowers fresh students are advised to wear warm comfortable clothes and shoes.

Q: Can I Video the class no_videos

A: Your tutors love to feel relaxed while teaching our students, so please be advised the use of Videos, Dictaphones and Mobile Phones is not allowed during class. We understand students families may need to be contact, so we ask that Mobile Phones be put on silent or vibration and answered outside of the classroom.

However there is plenty of time allowed for students to take as may photos they wish of all designs

Q: What is commercial bridal floristry?
A: Commercial florist need to be able to make and design Bridal Floristry and suggest ideas to the Bride on the design of her bouquet and the variety of flowers that will compliment the bride, bridesmaids and flower girls dresses.

Because Kay's School of Flower Arranging and Floristry is an independent business we teach you all the tricks of the trade and our aim is to support and advise students on opening and managing a floristry business, however many of our past students are working from home as freelance florist.   

Q: How will I know how much flowers I need to buy?
A: Students are instructed how to calculate how many flowers they need for each bridal, sympathy and flower arrangement design and how much it will cost them. When to buy their wedding flowers and how to design a wedding price list.

Q: What do students need to bring to class?
A: please bring, a packed lunch, large notebook, biro and coloured pencils, a florist scissors, a Camera, plastic sleeves, and folders for their handouts

Q: If I do all four modules will I be qualified to open a flower shop?
A: Although many students have opened shops before finishing their courses, Kay's recommends students obtain work experience in a florist shop first.

Q: Does every student want to open a Florist Shop?

A: Many students enroll in our courses to become involved in the floral industry, or they may want to work from home, whilst others want to be able to arrange flowers for their own personal pleasure and satisfaction. Whatever the reason, you will be delighted with what Kay’s Flower School can offer you. Our floral design classes will teach you hundreds of floristry tips of the trade, and they receive expert advise throughout each course.

Q:  Do students have to sit an exam, if so I will be very nervous?
A: Yes most people are nervous at the thoughts of sitting an exam,there's no need to worry, because by the time you have completed each module you will have an excellent knowledge of floristry and floral design and the test at the end of each module is simply true or false answers.
